Dear Friends,
another Monday, another data drop, and the tape is starting to tell a different story. In recent weeks, capital has shifted from polite interest to full-scale operational commitment across the deep tech value chain, accelerating in ways that spreadsheets alone can’t quite capture. Nine-figure checks in robotics are now funding payroll, not just prototypes: Digua Robotics closed a $100 million Series A in China to develop humanoid robots, while Serve Robotics raised $80 million in a Series B to expand its autonomous sidewalk delivery fleets across U.S. cities.
Even at the seed stage, the shift is clear: Glacier, which builds AI-powered robotic arms for waste sorting, secured funding for commercial deployment—because a one-armed robot that works weekends still costs less than a human who churns on Thursday.
In other words, liquidity isn’t in “show-me” mode anymore—it’s in motion. Over the past month alone, we’ve tracked several billion dollars in combined equity and non-dilutive credit, with substantial flows into hardware, clean energy, and advanced materials.
In the energy and climate space, Radiant surpassed the billion-dollar post-money mark with a $165 million Series B to commercialize portable microreactors. The U.S. Department of Defense contract was treated by investors as quasi-sovereign credit support. In Europe, the public sector continues to de-risk private capital with first-loss structures: SeaTwirl received €15 million to develop vertical-axis floating wind turbines, and Plagazi secured €29.5 million to build a waste-to-hydrogen gasification plant.
Advanced materials proved the sleeper theme of the week. France’s Quobly closed a €21 million round to accelerate development of superconducting quantum processors, betting on cryogenic packaging and nickel–niobium films to halve error rates by 2026. In Canada, Exterra raised $14.5 million (CAD $20 million) to convert asbestos tailings into battery-grade nickel and low-carbon silica, backed by partnerships with BASF, WSP, and provincial agencies.
On the debt front, the playbook is growing more sophisticated: Belgium-based ITM Radiopharma secured a non-dilutive facility of up to $262.5 million, expandable to $350 million pending FDA milestones—structured against durable reimbursement codes. In the U.S., Wander raised $50 million in a Series B that folds senior debt into the preferred stack, avoiding down-round optics while preserving investor IRR.
Funds are following suit.
Hyundai assembled a $91 million robotics and AI fund in just 10 days; Sinopec launched a $690 million hydrogen-focused venture fund; and Mitsui Chemicals closed a $60 million vehicle targeting polymer substitutes. Harper Court Ventures added another signal to the trend, launching a $25 million fund to back early-stage deep tech startups emerging from the University of Chicago ecosystem. Meanwhile, Lewis & Clark AgriFood launched its third fund, focused on technology-driven transformation in the agri-food sector. Outset Ventures closed a NZ$41.5 million fund to support deep tech innovation in New Zealand, and C5 Capital is currently raising a $750 million vehicle focused on global energy security, with targeted investments across the nuclear energy supply chain, including advanced reactors, automation technologies, and critical materials.
Finally, regulatory fluency is becoming a real moat. Startups that bake compliance into their product—think NRC licensing for microreactors or REACH conformity for polymers—are closing rounds faster and with tighter discounts.
Deep tech isn’t risk-free—but today, that risk is being priced with more nuance. As of mid-2025, deep tech is emerging as a distinct capital markets subsector, with its own valuation logic, liquidity cadence, and regulatory catalysts. The things on today’s cap tables—atoms, bits, biology, and next-gen materials—are reshaping industrial baselines. Watch the risk spreads, the offtake curves, and the regulatory calendars: they reveal where the next cycle’s profit pools will form—often before the headlines, and sometimes before the spreadsheets.
Each week, through this editorial, I aim to offer a narrative lens on the shifting rhythms of deep tech capital—but it’s just a slice of the full picture. For the complete list of deals, startups, and fund activity we’ve tracked this week, keep scrolling below.
See you next Monday—enjoy the read!
